How to buy a GOOD used tractor

Author: Progressive Farmer

Our Shop Talk mechanic's best tips.

A good small tractor will last a long time if treated properly. But if you are in the market to buy a used tractor, beware. The guy selling it to you may not have treated it right. What he could be selling are the beat-up results of his mistakes.

First check out the obvious: The condition of tires, paint and sheet metal are easy to see. They can give you an accurate picture of the overall care that the tractor has been given. But remember that paint is only skin deep.

Don't be fooled by the hours shown on the tractor; the hour meter could have been changed. Always keep in mind that an older tractor that has been properly operated and maintained is usually a better buy than a newer one that has been abused.

Finally, make sure the owner is indeed the owner. Get some proof of purchase and clear proof of ownership. If there is a lien on the tractor, the lien holder can repossess your tractor even though you have paid for it.

Getting stuck with a lemon is a bad deal; getting stuck with a stolen lemon is worse.
