Much like other tractor companies of its time, Oliver Farm Equipment Company was the result of a 4-company merger between American Seeding Machine Company, Nichols and Shepard Company, Oliver Chilled Plow Works and Hart-Parr Tractor Company back in 1929. Each of these four companies were not only diverse in their expertise and product line, but were also in danger of selling entirely obsolete products in a very saturated market; hence, the merger.

The new Oliver company soon after acquired several other companies; namely, McKenzie Manufacturing Company, Ann Arbor Agricultural Machine Company, Cleveland Tractor Company and A.B. Farquhar Company, in that order. 1948 saw a brand new line of Oliver tractors, and the company became a leader in diesel powered tractors in the 1950s.

The company was later purchased in 1960 by the White Motor Company, who was also noted as the eventual owner of the Minneapolis Moline and Cockshutt brands. White is now owned by AGCO.
